St. Luke Lutheran Community Plans Major Addition to St. Luke - North Canton Campus St. Luke Lutheran Community is building a major addition on the North Canton campus with an estimated construction cost of 7.7 million dollars. The 41,000 square foot addition will house a state-of-the-art, short term rehabilitation center and assisted living that can accommodate the needs of individuals with memory impairment.

Dr. John L. Spieler, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the project is critically important to the mission of St. Luke and represents our commitment to the region and older adults. The project is modeled after the nationally acclaimed neighborhood concept, which has significantly changed the perception of nursing homes for residents, staff, and families from one of an institution to a more home-like environment. The first floor of the addition will be a rehabilitation center for patients requiring short term nursing and comprehensive rehabilitation care. The rehabilitation center will include 24 private rooms with lounges and private dining. The 19-unit assisted living facility will have a separate entrance and will be equipped with secure features to support residents with Alzheimer’s.

The new addition is designed to provide care in a setting which supports the concept of person-centered care. According to Evelyn Moore, Executive Director, “The project will allow St. Luke to provide the type of environment and amenities that meet the expectations of current consumers. In today’s world, individuals expect private rooms and facilities that feel more like their home.”

Funding for the project is through PNC Bank and a tax-exempt bond issue. Construction began with Welty Construction in September 2014. The project will be completed early 2016.

Giving Thanks and Praying for Pastor Kennell

From the Administrator:
Pastor Kennell has made the very difficult decision to retire (a second time) from St. Luke Lutheran Community North Canton effective May 28, 2013.   We have been blessed spiritually by his wisdom, kind demeanor and sense of humor, but most of all by his love for the Lord.  We have also been very fortunate to have worked alongside his wife, Debbie Kennell, who has spent much of her time composing our daily devotions and ensuring that Pastor Kennell was here despite her protests that he should slow down.
Please join us in a reception for Pastor Kennell following the May 28th service as well as a reception following the Sunday 2pm service on June 2nd to welcome Pastor Christopher Bartholomew.  Pastor Bartholomew will conduct 2 services weekly, Sunday at 2pm and Tuesdays at 10:30am.  He will also be on campus all day on Tuesday  to minister to those residents and families who are in need of spiritual guidance and we are most grateful for that accommodation.
Pastor Bartholomew was gracious enough to provide a biography so that you will get to know him better and that is included below.  Please join me in saying goodbye to Pastor and Debbie Kennell and in offering our best wishes for a successful future to PastorChristopher Bartholomew.
Christopher Bartholomew was born September 25, 1956, in Little Rock, Arkansas.  The second oldest of six children, he grew up in Bloomington, IL and Sandusky, OH.  He received the associate in arts degree from Golden Valley Lutheran College in 1978, and in 1981 received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota.  He attended Princeton Theological Seminary and received his Master of Divinity degree from Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary. He in 1985 was ordained in the American Lutheran Church on June 2, 1985.  As pastor he has served congregations in Peoria, IL, Brook Park, OH, and Barberton, OH.  In addition, he has served several congregations as interim pastor.  He is married to the Rev. Barbara Bartholomew and currently lives in Wadsworth, OH.

State Budget Impact on St. Luke

Ohio Governor John Kasich unveiled the state budget proposal, which attempts to reduce the estimated 8 billion dollar shortfall in state funds. The budget contained changes decreasing Medicaid reimbursement by approximately $425 million for long term care providers. Since we are heavily dependent on Medicaid funding, this budget has a severe effect on St. Luke Lutheran Community and all long term care providers in the state of Ohio.

We clearly recognize that the state needs to be more fiscally responsible and in addition, offer (and pay for) more home and community based services for people who desire to remain at home. However, at the same time, consideration must be given to ensure that long term care providers are fairly compensated for the care and services we provide. It is hard to believe that in today’s world of more people requiring long term care services that the state would be reducing this payment.

During the last four years, St. Luke has attempted to anticipate the reduced level of Medicaid reimbursement. We can assure you that St. Luke will continue to provide the highest quality service, and we will continue to look for ways to more efficient without compromising service.

I encourage you to advocate on our behalf for fair reimbursement for the important services we provide to our area’s seniors.
